I retired from the United States Navy 1 June 2003, after serving for thirty years and a couple of days. My goal was to teach middle school social studies and I brought into all the hype that I could get hired to teach on a temporary certificate. At that time I had never heard the term highly qualified and it took me a while to figure out what it meant. Once I did, I realized that I would never teach social studies unless I became highly qualified in that field. So I decided to become highly qualified reading teacher instead. The day school started this year I was offered a reading position at Brentwood MS, mainly because I had completed six of the ten reading courses required to get a K-12 five year Reading certificate. I start my day off with an eighth grade double block level I&II’s. The rest of my day is spent teaching level III’s and above seventh and eighth graders. I also tutor twice a week as a UWF SES reading instructor. On the busiest day of the year to travel, my wife and I decided that was a good day to go to California to see our granddaughter for Christmas. Will never do that again, after leaving Pensacola at 8 am, we finally go to our hotel room in Lemoore at about 2 am. We had a good visit and were happy to arrive back in P-cola after an uneventful day of travel. I spent the rest of the break working on lesson plans to help my students get ready for the FCAT coming up in a couple of months.
